Environmental Update (February 2009)
WEEE Consultation launched
The Government has invited views on their proposals to further
amend The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations
(WEEE) 2006 (as amended in 2007). The consultation was stimulated
in response to a review of the first and second compliance periods-
any changes would come into effect for the 4th
compliance period (1st Jan- 31st Dec
2010).
The consultation is relevant to a wide number of organisations,
including, those producing electrical and electronic equipment
(EEE) and those distributing EEE/ receiving WEEE for recycling/
recovery.
The aim of the proposals is to streamline the UK WEEE system in
order to improve the Producer Compliance Scheme (PCS) approval
process, develop the Distributor Take-back Scheme (DTS), and reduce
the administrative burdens by simplifying the data reporting
requirements and the evidence system.
The proposals include for the development of a Code of Practice
for the Collection of WEEE from Designated Collection Facilities
(DCF), extension of Duty of Care, development of industry protocols
for WEEE, and further development or revision of The Guidance on
Best Available Treatment Recovery and Recycling Techniques
(BATRRT).
