Environmental Update (March 2010)
Ask the auditor
We often get asked a wide range of questions while in
conversation with clients. Please see below for questions asked
this month and our response.
How long does it take to achieve ISO
14001?
Unfortunately, there is no easy answer to this as it depends on
a number of factors, such as size of the company, activities
undertaken and the amount of internal and external resource
available.
Based on research and anecdotal evidence, 12 months for full
implementation is about the average length of time it takes, but it
can be done much quicker than this if the company is so
inclined.
It is important to remember that there are a number of key
milestones that need to be met prior to achieving certification.
These include the completion of a full audit cycle, a Management
Review as well as the collation of at least 3 months worth of
records.
What resources are required to implement ISO
14001?
Probably the biggest single resource is staff time, as those
involved will need to become familiar with the process and allocate
time to attend meetings, review site operations as well as complete
applicable paperwork.
Finance can also be important as it may be necessary to pay for
training, make changes to the site/operations etc, however, it
should be remembered that research has shown that most businesses
can pay-back the cost of implementation within the first few
years.
