Environmental Update (April 2010)

Price of landfill rises

Landfill tax rose to £48 a tonne on the 1st April and is set to continue to rise by £8 a tonne until at least 2013. The lower rate of £2.50 for inert waste remains the same.

The 2010 Budget also outlined plans to continue the £8 a tonne rise until 2014/15, taking the tax alone up to £80 a tonne (landfills also charge a gate fee and your waste carrier will charge for transportation to the landfill).

Landfill tax is a tax on waste that is disposed of at a permitted landfill site.

It was introduced at £8 a tonne in 1996 to encourage people to reduce the amount of waste they send to landfill. It is paid by the landfill operator but charged back to those who send their waste to landfill. As a business, you can save money by finding alternatives to landfill, such as recycling or recovering the waste you produce.

If you have any questions or would like help reducing the amount of waste you send to landfill then please contact the Mentor 24/7 Advice line on 0800 634 7006.
