Health & Safety Update (August 2010)
Peer review likely to lead to changes to health and safety
laws
Lord Young, a former cabinet minister appointed to review
current heath and safety legislation, has warned that changes need
to be made to reduce bureaucracy and protect businesses.
The Prime Minister asked the peer to review the current laws,
about which he has previously expressed concerns. Echoing David
Cameron’s worries, Lord Young has stated that complying with
current health and safety regulations is a "burden [on some
businesses] that we have to eliminate."
Lord Young’s recommendations are to be officially handed over to
the Prime Minister next month. The review is expected to conclude
that health and safety laws are vital for the protection of
employees, particularly those in hazardous industries. However, his
recommendations are also expected to urge the removal of many of
the current requirements for organisations operating in locations
with minimal risk, such as schools, shops and offices.
David Cameron is also expected to make changes to current
regulations to protect anyone who intervenes in a
dangerous situation in order help someone, from
punishment under health and safety laws. Last year he explained, "I
want everyone to know that with the Conservatives, if you do good,
get involved and make a contribution, the system will back you. And
I want people to know that with the Conservatives, the legal system
will be there protecting those who need it most."
