Firm fined for failing to secure permit for waste facility

Environmental update 28/09/2011

Scunthorpe-based waste management firm Dock Management Services has been prosecuted following the operation of a waste facility without a permit.

The Environment Agency (EA) visited the site on Wybeck Road in July of last year following numerous complaints regarding waste activities.

Loaded skips, piles of bricks and demolition waste was found at the site by EA officers, despite there being no permit in place to allow for the storage of skip waste.

Three more visits were carried out and the waste was still found to be in situ, despite warning letters from the EA regarding applying for necessary permits.

Dock Management Services – which was being run by Matthew Jackson – was prosecuted by the EA for failing to ensure waste transfer documents were in place, and failing to have the necessary waste permit.

Mr Jackson was fined £7,000 plus £4,200 costs and a £15 victim surcharge at Scunthorpe Magistrates Court last week.

The EA officer leading the investigation said, “This prosecution should act as a strong deterrent to anyone thinking about operating a waste facility without the necessary environmental permits in place."

“Environmental legislation seeks to ensure that wastes are dealt with properly and do not pollute our environment or harm our health. Operating outside the legal system jeopardises both,” added the officer.
