Carbon Plan published by government

Environmental update 05/12/2011

The Carbon Plan – which details the progress made by the UK in slashing carbon emissions and tracks future plans – has been published by the government.

Chris Huhne, energy and climate change secretary, said that the country's economy is well on track to meet the targets for cutting carbon emissions, which state that emissions must be slashed by at least 80 per cent on 1990 levels by 2050.

The Carbon Plan confirms that emissions have already been lowered by more than a quarter on 1990 levels and that the UK economy will exceed the 34 per cent target set under the Climate Change Act for the first 15 years.

The Plan also contains a revised online 2050 calculator which will enable users to consider the cost of hitting the targets. Users can compare the cost of their future energy needs and what they would save by switching to lower carbon policies.

Huhne said, “To the negotiators in Durban working this week and next to make progress on a global agreement on climate change, the Carbon Plan shows the UK is walking the walk, demonstrating that it can be done and living up to our promise to show climate leadership.

“To the public and businesses at home, rightly worried about the cost of living and state of the economy, the Carbon Plan shows that the gradual rebalancing of our economy away from carbon is achievable and, in the long run, highly desirable,” added Mr Huhne.
