Employment Law FAQ

Part-timers' Breaks

Some of my employees work eight hours each day and the rest work 10 hours a day. What breaks are they entitled to?

Adults aged 18 or over, working more than six hours in a single shift, are entitled to a 20 minute unpaid break during their shift, which cannot be taken at either the start or end of the shift. There is no entitlement to additional breaks for longer shifts. However, if your employees currently do get longer breaks than this, their entitlements cannot be changed unless they agree to the change.

Note also that Young workers aged between 16 and 18 are entitled to a 30 minute break after 4.5 hours.
