Environmental Consultancy

The following environmental services are available on a consultancy basis to existing clients and any other business seeking expert environmental support.

Environmental Risk Assessment

Company Directors are required in the Companies Act 2006 to consider the impact that their business has on the environment and the local community. This can be demonstrated in a number of ways, including through the development and implementation of an environmental policy, staff training or through adopting a formal environmental management system (EMS). A key way to demonstrate commitment without necessarily having to implement a full environmental management system is through the completion of an environmental risk assessment.

Although there is no explicit legal requirement to conduct an environmental risk assessment (except where required as part of a permit/ licence application or in an Environmental Impact Assessment), it is a useful exercise as it helps to identify and assess your business’s activities with regard to the harm that they may potentially cause on the environment.

An environmental risk assessment provides a structured framework to assist you in making appropriate and measured decisions about the control of any identified environmental risks, with the whole of your business in mind.

Mentor can help you develop an environmental risk assessment and implement any key recommendations based on the outcomes of the assessments.

Service Summary

  • Site visit conducted by an experienced and qualified environmental consultant.
  • The provision of environmental risk assessment documentation.
  • Advice on how to undertake, implement and review risk assessment actions.

On-going support can also be purchased, including the provision of 24 hour telephony advice and an online update service. Insurance indemnity is also available as an optional extra at no additional cost.

Prices for full day and half day consultancy services are based on your specific needs. For more details, please contact the Mentor 24 hour Environmental Advice Line on 0800 634 7000.

Environmental Policy Development and Implementation

An environmental policy is the document used to demonstrate your business’s commitment towards managing your environmental impact. Similarly, it is the document that your business will be judged on by your customers and your supply chain and thus it is important that your policy gives an accurate reflection of your business’s environmental performance and targets; it should not be a smoke screen or contain platitudes.

A good environmental policy is becoming more and more important when tendering for new work.

Service Summary

  • Telephony or face-to-face discussion with an experienced and qualified environmental consultant.
  • Tailored environmental policy documentation provided.
  • Advice on how to undertake, implement and review your environmental policy.

On-going support can also be purchased, including the provision of 24 hour telephony advice and an online update service. Insurance indemnity is also available as an optional extra at no additional cost.

Tender Development & Support

The process of tendering for new work is crucial to ensuring the ongoing success of many businesses. However, it is becoming more and more challenging for businesses to meet the ever changing requirements being placed on them by potential new clients.

The tendering process has impacts on a wide range of your business’s resources, including finances, staffing and time. Often businesses need support in ensuring that they fully understand the requirements of a tender questionnaire and provide accurate information to increase their chances of tender success.

This service is designed to work in association with our dedicated team of health and safety consultants to ease the burden associated with the completion of the environmental and health and safety elements of tendering documentation. This includes the research of specific tenderee initiatives or policies as well as answering specific tendering questions and preparing and amending documentation to suit the tender.

  • Research of tenderee policies and procedures.
  • Development of documentation associated with the tender.

Environmental Management Systems

Implement an Environmental Management System (EMS) in your organisation and achieve ISO 14001 certification.

For those businesses that do not subscribe to the Mentor Environmental 'Direct', 'Connect' or Select' services, we can provide EMS implementation advice and support which will enable you to achieve formal certification.

EMS such as ISO 14001 is one of the key mechanisms businesses can use to manage their environmental performance and legal responsibilities. As well as being of commercial benefit, EMS provide the means for businesses to make savings in terms of material and energy use, which can result in initial set-up costs being paid back within a relatively short period of time.

In addition to ISO 14001, we also have experience with other environmental management systems such as EMAS, BS8555 and Green Dragon.

Carbon Management

The identification and management of business carbon emissions has become a key issue for many businesses with greater amounts of pressure being applied by the Government through legislation and more informally through the supply chain. This has resulted in larger energy users in particular having to account for the energy they use as well as putting a system in place to reduce emissions at source and off-set those which can not be reduced.

Carbon foot-printing

A carbon footprint is the total set of greenhouse gas emissions caused directly and indirectly by an individual, organisation, event or product; it is expressed in terms of 'equivalent amounts' of carbon dioxide (CO2e).

For those businesses wishing to calculate a simple carbon foot-print, the following business calculator can be used: -

RBS Calculator

http://www.rbs.co.uk/business/carbon.ashx or

Natwest Calculator

http://www.natwest.co.uk/business/carbon.ashx

Those requiring a more sophisticated or specific carbon foot-print calculation based on the latest DEFRA emission conversion factors should contact us directly to discuss your requirements. We can provide a carbon footprint for part or all of your activities, products or services as well as recommendations to reduce your carbon footprint.

Service Summary

  • Detailed on-site carbon assessment by an experienced and qualified environmental consultant.
  • Provision of a report outlining the business’s carbon foot-print, recommendations to reduce emissions and a carbon off-set calculation.
  • Follow-up visit/ discussion to discuss the report actions.
  • Follow-up assessment and training can be provided upon request.
