Tax FAQ

Self Employment

I have a builder carrying out work on our site who says he is self employed. Can I take his word for it and not deduct tax?

As you are in the construction industry it is your responsibility to check with HM Revenue & Customs as to what rate of tax to deduct if any. To be able to pay them without deduction they must be registered and HMIT must confirm that no tax is to be deducted.
